Commissioned by Elizabeth Hering and the McNary High School Wind Ensemble

“Seeds” was commissioned by Elizabeth Hering in 2023 in hopes of creating a new work to fit her band’s unique instrumentation. This has proven to be an inspiring and meaningful collaboration over the miles between Oregon and Texas.

From Elizabeth — “I love that McNary kids will have a role in making the contemporary musical world richer and fuller through this experience. In this piece, you can hear sounds of rain, hummingbirds, bees, and all sorts of colorful indications of life and beauty.” Inspiration was drawn from the poem “Seeds” by Austin Caraway and is infused with Bach’s chorale, BWV 26. Ach wie flüchtig, ach wie nichtig— Life, is fleeting.

In 2026, the piece was reorchestrated for full wind ensemble.
